Jason Gilkison is an Australian choreographer and creative director, best known for being a choreographer for TV shows such as Superstars of Dance (2009), So You Think You Can Dance (2008-2009), BBC Proms (2016), as well as being a judge on So You Think You Can Dance TV show from 2010 to 2013. In 2014, he became a judge in the 4th season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia TV series, and stayed in that position until the Grand Final at the end of the year. Jason was also known for being a creative director of choreography for a well-known dancing reality TV game show Strictly Come Dancing from 2016 to 2018, as well as its sister documentary TV series titled Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two from 2013 to 2018.

Before he became internationally successful, he and his dance partner Peta Roby were undefeated Australian Latin dancing champions from 1981 to 1997, as well as World, British, and International champions during those years. He began dancing when he was 4 years old.

His grandparents were owners of the ballroom dance studio, located in Perth, which was the first of its kind in Australia, and Jason trained there when he was young.

His first dance partner was Peta Roby, who he started dancing with when he was 7 years old.

Jason and Peta, besides being undefeated Australian Latin Champions for 16 years, from 1981 to 1997, they were also named Young Australian of the Year with an award in 1991.

In 1991, the dancing pair became residing teachers in various prestigious ballroom schools in London, England, and stayed there until 1998, training many of the upcoming young dancers at the time.

Jason received the Australian Sports Medal on September 29, 2000, for the exceptional contribution and service to dancing.

Jason received a nomination for a BAFTA Award a total of 5 times as of early 2019.

In 2017, he was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award in the category of “Best Entertainment Craft Team” for Strictly Come Dancing TV reality game show, shared with Mark Kenyon, who was a lighting designer, and Vicky Gill, who designed the costumes.

After the success of world tours in more than 50 countries since Jason’s acceptance of the role of artistic director and choreographer in 2001, Burn the Floor live dancing group settled at the Longacre Theatre Broadway stage in 2009. It was supposed to be a 6-week engagement project but due to the popularity of Jason’s choreography in the show, they appeared for 8 months instead, breaking the box office record of the theatre twice during that period.

He designed choreography based on the music of artists such as Whitney Houston, Robin Thicke, Bruno Mars, Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Kylie Minogue, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, and many others.

He has worked on choreography for well-known musicians and singers such as Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Lady Gaga, Shania Twain, Tony Bennett, Robbie Williams, as well as the English pop group Take That.
