Are you in the market for a new, pretty inner-city green space to visit? Specifically, a pocket-sized, secret one that's hidden away in the middle of Central London?
We've got some good news if you answered yes. There's a tiny but enviably located public garden in the midst of London's Square Mile that's just had a makeover - and it has an incredibly special view of St Paul's Cathedral.
Located right next to door to the iconic City of London landmark, the small, secluded park at 25 Cannon Street has been there since 2000 but was recently revamped and re-christened the 'Garden of Reflection'. And its suitability as a spot for quiet personal reflection isn't the main reason for this new name.
The addition of a serene oval pond, perfectly positioned so as to reflect the nearby dome of St Paul's, is one of the most significant changes that the award-winning contemporary garden saw courtesy of its re-design. This cool, dramatic new element means that visitors to the hidden spot get not one but two views of Christopher Wren's world-famous architectural masterpiece as it's reflected as a mirror image.
More accessible pathways and new shrubs and foliage were also introduced, with the aim to create a year-round oasis in the middle of the City of London that is calming as well as unique. The garden at 25 Cannon Street is free to enter and open to the public 24/7.
The new 'Garden of Reflection' is the result of a collaboration between celebrated landscape architect and garden designer Tom Stuart Smith and Andrew Ewing of Studio Ewing, which specialises in unique water features. Sharing some clips of the tranquil green space on Instagram on July 7, Tom offered some further insight into how the unique garden came into being.
He wrote: "The water basin at the centre of the garden functions as a long bench and conceals two large skylights bringing daylight to a basement under the garden while on the roof of the building a new garden gives almost surreal views of the cathedral where it seems to have lost half a storey and to have been relocated in a flowery meadow. Thank you to a great team who worked on this."
Pembroke Senior Vice President Nick Moldon previously said: "Accessible to all, 25 Cannon Street gardens is an important oasis which promotes wellbeing in the heart of the City and compliments the elegant green spaces nearby."
